About the project

“Conservation and sustainable use of wild salmonid biological diversity in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula” is a joint project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Government of Russia was designed in 1998-2000 by the experts of Russian State Fisheries Committee, Moscow State University and Wild Salmon Centre (USA).

The project was approved by the Administrations of Kamchatka Oblast and Koryak Autonomous Okrug, and was widely discussed in the society. In 2001-2002 the Project was completed in consultations with GEF and UNDP experts, and after examination in GEF and UNDP started in Kamchatka since September 1, 2003.

“Conservation and sustainable use of wild salmonid biological diversity in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula” is the first project of the United Nations Development Programme directly devoted to salmon. Kamchatka was chosen as the last major region in the world, where we still have natural conditions for reproduction of salmon and which may be considered as a global gene pool of wild salmon.
